What is smørrebrød?

The Danish ‘open-faced’ sandwiches, smørrebrød, are perhaps the most famous of the Danish food classics.

Smørrebrød is pronounced “SMUR-uh-brod”. Directly translated it means ‘buttered bread’.

The open-faced sandwich consisting of buttered rugbrød (a dense, dark rye bread) topped with various cold cuts, fish, cheese, or spreads. The most famous is with pickled herring, roast beef and eggs topped with mayo and shrimps.

Often you eat Smørrebrød with a knife and fork. Then you are forced to take a break and sit down to eat and enjoy slowly. It is good for you.

Denmark’s smørrebrød custom started in the 19th century when factory and farm workers couldn’t go home for their midday meal. Instead, they packed a lunch of a couple of slices of rugbrød (danish dark rye bread) smeared with butter.

Now you can have Smørrebrød all over Copenhagen.
