Strøget (Pedestrian Street)

Had it not been for the big 1728 fire, Copenhagen would likely not be home to one of Europe’s longest pedestrian streets, Strøget is 1,1 km. The first half of Strøget, Frederiksberggade was built over the ruins of several medieval alleys.

The main street is bound on the west by City Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen), the central town square by Copenhagen City Hall, and on the east by Kongens Nytorv.

Most of the buildings along the street date to the late 19th or early 20th centuries.

Strøget was converted to a pedestrian zone on 17 November 1962.
