The heart of Nørrebro
One does not have to go many years back to when Copenhagen’s Nørrebro was a place where crime and gang wars were a big part of everyday life. That has changed. Not that all crime is gone from the district, but significant progress has really been made. One of the symbols of this change is the artist Bjørn Nørgaard’s ‘Nørrehjerte Hjerte’. A sculpture located close to the Red Square near Nørrebro Station on Nørrebrogade.
The heart at the top of the sculpture, which was erected in 2010, is made from real firearms that originated from a surrender action carried out by the police in 2009. In other words, to remove a number of firearms from the streets of Nørrebro, people could hand them over to the police without being questioned or prosecuted.
“We want to live together,” it says in ten languages on the sides of the sculpture, which is a manifesto against violence in the shared space in Copenhagen’s Nørrebro.
The initiative for the sculpture was taken by the association ‘We all want to live here – all the same!’ It is definitely worth taking the time to visit ‘Nørrebro’s Heart!’
