On a 20 cm high granite base, a solid 90 cm high plinth in reddish Bornholm granite is seen. On this is placed a bronze sculpture that shows the upper half of the mature writer in life size.
At St. Annæ Gade 33 there is also a memorial square for Martin Andersen Nexø. It was here that he was born on June 26, 1869. In Christianshavn there is also Martin Andersen Nexø Plads.
After HC Andersen, Martin Andersen Nexø is the Danish author who has been translated into the most languages. He is best known for Ditte Menneskebarn and Pelle the Conqueror, both of which describe poverty and social injustice. At the age of eight he moved to Bornholm, where he developed his interest in literature and art and was also given the name Nexø. As an adult he lived in Espergærde, and late in life in Dresden, Germany, where he died in 1954. He is buried at Assistens Cemetery in Nørrebro, Copenhagen.
