Soren Kirkegaard in Garden of the Royal Library

Philosopher Søren Kierkegaard is among the most famous Danes in world history. He lived from 1813 to 1855. His philosophy was based on Christianity, and he is considered the founder of existential philosophy. He is probably best known for a number of quotes, including: “Life must be understood backwards, but must be lived forwards.”

Kierkegaard is buried at Assistens Cemetery in Copenhagen’s Nørrebro. A statue of Søren Kierkegaard sits in the library garden at Christiansborg (by the Danish Parlement). An obvious place to philosophize about Kierkegaard’s thoughts and quotes.

The Library Garden, officially called the Royal Library Garden, is located between Christiansborg Palace and the Royal Library. A very peaceful place and with a fascinating water sculpture by sculptor Mogens Møller as a monument to the written word.
