The heart of Vesterbro

If you’re looking for an alternative place to visit in Denmark’s capital, it’s a great idea to stop by the heart of Vesterbro, which you can see at the corner of Viktoriagade & Abel Cathrines Gade in inner Vesterbro.

In the old days, the corner was called ‘Trekanten’ and there was a gas station where the sculpture stands today. In the early 1990s, the local artist Finn Christiansen, who still lives in the area, created the heart. He did this without permission, but because he felt that the then very rough neighborhood needed a heart. The heart remains an integral part of Vesterbro and is used by locals to send greetings to each other. In fact, the heart changes appearance almost every week.

By the way, the yellow hands attached to the base of the heart’s foundation refer to the fact that Finn Christiansen had started a religion, which he called the Yellow Hands, but he actually shut it down again when he actually gained followers of the religion.
