Cannonball in Crocodile Street
Denmark’s capital is filled with small and interesting places, Hitten Gems, that you should experience.
For example, in Krokodilegade (Crocodile Street), a part og Nyboder, you can see a cannonball lodged in the wall. The canonball is from the bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807. No fewer than 13,000 shells and fire rockets hit the city.
It was the British who attacked Copenhagen as part of the Napoleonic Wars. Denmark tried to remain neutral but was forced into the alliance between France and Russia, and thus an economic blockade of Great Britain.
The British would not accept this, attacked Denmark, and ended up taking over the Danish navy.
The houses in Krokodilegade are part of Nyboder, which was built by Christian IV from 1631 as housing for sailors in the navy and their families. Even today, it is people in the navy who have priority in living in these houses.
