Statue of King Frederik IX

Close to Langelinie in Copenhagen, at Nordre Toldbod, just around the Gefion Fountain, stands a statue of Denmark’s King Frederik IX.

The statue is positioned so that Frederik IX has a view over the Navy Area at Holmen.

Frederik IX, son of King Christian X, was born on March 11, 1899. He was king of Denmark from 1947 to 1972, when he died on January 14.

He was originally engaged to his half-cousin Princess Olga of Greece. However, this engagement was broken off, and in 1935 he married Princess Ingrid of Sweden, who became Queen of Denmark.

The statue was created by sculptor Knud Nellemose and erected in 1982, on the 35th anniversary of Frederick’s ascension to the throne by the Copenhagen Municipality.

In 1953, he signed a new constitution that included provisions for female succession.

Frederik IX was succeeded by his daughter, Queen Margrethe II.

Stop by and see the proud statue that depicts the old king in uniform.
